One major source of getting a virus is by downloading software from the internet from an unknown source. Even a pop up disguised as an alert with URL on it, is a common source. There are various ways on email, pop-ups, websites, within a free program, etc. The key to avoiding them is to be aware and to trust only known good software. Anti-virus and anti-spyware software helps if they are updated with the virus/spyware signature.
