Use of Rogue DNS Servers on Rise

They’re called “servers that lie.” Mendacious machines controlled by hackers that reroute Internet traffic from infected computers to fraudulent Web sites are increasingly being used to launch attacks, according to a paper published this week by researchers with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Google Inc.

Beware, some rogue DNS servers would return true ip address of servers for some sites, while returning false ip on another. This makes it more important to protect your PC with anti-virus software that would check on what was change on your PC by a malicious program.

Thanks for this post and for raising awareness on this issue. I noticed this on my daughter’s laptop. It was running very slow and it turned out that a virus was executing denial-of-service attacks on various sites. I had forgotten to renew her antivirus software, and that was when the virus somehow got to her machine. It was a pain to fix, so I strongly second the article’s advice on making sure antivirus software is installed and current.
