Beware of Current Phishing Scams
CA Security has a list of phishing scams currently targeting websites, commonly banks, to lure users to visit forged websites unknowingly. These will force a user to enter their confidential information in the fake website, and thus the hacker can gain access to a user’s account.
Phishers use many different methods in order to fool users into parting with sensitive and valuable information.
One common method for obfuscating the true URL involves placing a username and password in the URL, using the following syntax:
http(s)://username:password@server/resource.ext
In this way, a “phisher” may use the username portion to make a URL appear to point to one location, when it actually refers to somewhere else.
Recent variants of the phishbank family have used additional techniques, such as using e-mail that is essentially one large image (as opposed to HTML with an obscured link). Hence, the user does not have to click on the URL in particular; clicking anywhere on the message body image takes an unsuspecting user to another site, which spoofs the real site in order to encourage users to part with sensitive and confidential information, namely, their online banking details.
Latest scam enticing users of Citizen’s Bank with an email subject “Citizens Bank is not responsible for any losses or damages in connection with the information” is actually a Phishbank.BWB spyware.
Another one attacking Monster with an email subject “CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION: DATA CONFIRMATION” is a phishing attempt that is known as Phishbank.BVY.
If you have an email from an “eBay” with subject like “RE: September 70% OFF”, beware of it, it contains Phishbank.BUR phishing link.
If you have a Phishbank infection in your Temporary Internet Files you can use the following procedure to remove it.
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Select Tools | Internet Options
3. Click Delete Files under Temporary Internet files. The Delete Files dialog appears.
4. Check the box to Delete all offline content and click OK
5. Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog.
